Director's Statement
This short film is based on 2 very important issues – Shadow Pandemic during Covid and the Silence that surrounds it hence the title of the film – Ek Chup ( One Silence ).The violence against women & domestic abuse has grown so much during Covid 19 that UN Women Organization has termed it as Shadow Pandemic – pandemic within a pandemic.
This shadow pandemic is a global phenomenon and we need a global collective effort to stop it. It cuts across all economic strata – though its mostly spoken about in lower economic strata but it also exists in well to do – rich homes and families where the stigma is more and hence hardly spoken about. It is usually shoved under the carpet as there is no support system to talk about the abuse or challenge the abuser. Infact stats say that 77% women don’t mention the incident /abuse to anyone – and this is the 2nd focus of this film – almost in every society we are taught as girls to remain silent – right from the day we are born we are taught to live our life simply without confrontations – In India there is a very popular Indian idiom – Ek Chup Sau Sukh – In English too there is an exact translation of this idiom – another popular idiom – Silence is Golden– that all your ill’s will go away if you remain silent and not confront issues.
In this film the woman protagonist also believes in this philosophy of life – Ek Chup Sau Sukh (Silence is Golden) since she is conditioned to this kind of life right from the beginning. But then we see how the meaning of her silence changes into various shades of silence during the journey of the film and how the weakness of her silence becomes her strength. The film also questions morality and what that means to each one of us. There is an urgent need globally to start a conversation on violence against women especially during Covid times. Certain global facts which says it all –
